Common Misconceptions
Knowledge is power. I've seen clients operate on assumptions that feel logical but take them down the wrong path before they start. Here are four misconceptions I encounter in nearly every new consultation — and what actually matters instead.
"I earn minimum wage, so I don't need to register as autónomo"
The obligation to register is triggered by habitual economic activity, not by your level of income.
"The Tax Office can just check my bank statements — I don't need accounting records."
Every autónomo is legally required to maintain invoicing and expense registers. Bank statements are not a substitute.
"I declare my holiday rental income in my home country."
Income from a Spanish property is subject to IRNR (Non-Resident Tax) in Spain regardless of what you declare elsewhere.
"I declare my pension in my home country — that's sufficient."
Fiscal residency in Spain requires you to declare your worldwide income here, regardless of what you may be obliged to declare elsewhere.
